Bob Muglia’s heart was definitely in cloud while the Keynote was well grounded. Most of what they showed was in Shipping versions of SharePoint 2010, Visual Studio 2010, Exchange 2010, SQL 2008 R2 with Powerpivot, SQL Analysis Services and Reporting Services and with others coming later this year like Communicator Server 14 and client, and Windows Phone 7.
The 10 year vision of Dynamic IT, we are 7 years into it.
It’s about simplifying and making it more effective… “The cloud is about standardization of services and helping you focus on your business…”
The way MS does this is with service enabled, virtualized, process driven tools and services…
The platform currently is Azure, Exchange Online, and SharePoint Online.
Bob Muglia explains… “We are learning how to deliver services such as SharePoint Online for the foundation.” The core essence
- cloud is about JIT computing for delivering a service
- Identity federation
- cloud is about scale about shared hardware
- self service for self delivery to lower cost
A quick Visual Studio 2010 demo
Showed the new Testing Center functionality with replay like Tivo functionality I think it looks very promising for SharePoint testing and should make the lives of devs and testers easier for tracking down issues. Great news for reducing bugs in production and saving dev time!
“Communicator Server and Communicator 14” (to come out later this year)
Gurdeep on Communicator 14… “No more bubbles for presence now we get pictures from SharePoint.” Need more justification for My Sites?
Microsoft saves over 1 million dollars with simple calling and conferencing in Communicator 14…

Figure above: “Soft phone”, Presence with pictures from SP, and HD Full Screen 720p video conferencing with Communicator Server & client 14. Amazing demo!
The backend to the expertise search in the UI of communicator is integrated with SharePoint for find experts by skills without their name, and is very rich in SharePoint 2010 with Outlook skills recommendations. As well improvements to the video conferencing were extremely impressive with full screen HD 720p video conferencing demo from communicator 14… streaming very well #Teched… Watch out Cisco!
Moving on to Windows Phone 7 Demo
Clicking a link on your Windows Phone 7 device in Outlook opens into your synchronized or online SharePoint lists right on your phone.
He then went on to show writeback from Excel including a cool demo of intellisense type recommendation when clicking a word in Excel.
RT @longzheng: sharepoint integration in Windows Phone 7 at #teched keynote http://flic.kr/p/88tqtq
Powerpivot save to SharePoint saves it to Analysis services as a normal database. Check out this amazing silverlight control for managing your powerpivot data. Extremely rich.
@joeloleson: Wickely fast. Wicked Fast. Pretty sure this guy isn't from Boston :) #teched BI Excel demo going from 100 M records to 2M in 1 sec
Love this visualization of Video Thumbnails color coded by popularity… visualizations based on X such as Ratings (PG R) or user ratings – like with stars
@resing “Pivotviewer announced. Available this week. Powered the netflix bi visualization demo. Cool dynamic effects. #teched”
Wrap up:
Muglia Cloud Quotables:
- "Already over 10,000 cloud partners/service providers"
- "It's your data, we understand that!"
- "We'll help take you from you're environment into the future”
Wow. Not a lot of major new announcements, but was great to see so many products in such a short time and how Muglia tied them to Cloud and Dynamic IT was most impressive. In his final comments he left the stage after saying Cloud… “It might be for you!”
